Essay and Book Cover Redesign Contest

The Winners of the Essay and Book Cover Redesign Contests have been notified. All art work and essays will be on display at the Library Express location in the Steamtown Mall, located on the second floor across from Kay Jewelers.

Starting November 1st you may visit the Library Express location during business hours (Wednesday and Thursday 11am – 7pm, Friday and Saturday 11am – 3pm) to view the submissions on display. The exhibit will be on display for two weeks, ending on November 16th. If you entered, you may pick up your submission at the Library Express location after November 16th.

The Future of Reading: A Conversation

Join us for our final panel event for this year’s Scranton Reads! The Future of Reading: A Conversation, on Tuesday, October 25th at 7 pm at St. Luke’s at 232 Wyoming Avenue, Scranton.

A panel of readers will engage audience members in a conversation about the state of reading in our society. Members include Dr. Phil Jenkins, Dr. Agnes Cardoni, Mr. Jim Frutchey, Ms. Katie Johnson, and Ms. Andrea Talarico. Join the conversation and share you thoughts on reading, books and what the future of reading will be like.

Film Screening

Book Cover Redesign and Essay Contest Deadlines

In celebration of the 10th anniversary of Scranton Reads we will be hosting an essay contest and a book cover redesign contest. To participate, all you have to do is readFahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury.

For the essay contest we ask that you discuss one of the following prompts:

A. What would the world be like without books?
B. In what ways has technology changed and challenged the world of literature?

For the book cover redesign contest we ask that you design an original book cover based on your interpretation of the book.

There will be three entry levels for each contest:

Intermediate, ages through 13 or middle school students
High School, ages 13 – 17 or high school students
Adult, ages 18 & above, college students & adults

Deadline for submissions is October 16th at the Albright Memorial Library or The Weinberg Memorial Library at the University of Scranton.

The essays and artwork will be judged by a panel of local artists and book lovers and displayed at an exhibit at November’s First Friday in Scranton. First place for each category will win an Amazon gift card. Winners will be announced at the exhibit.

Banned Books Panel Discussion

“There is more than one way to burn a book,” writes Ray Bradbury, author of the classic novel Fahrenheit 451. Please join us for a panel discussion with local librarians and educators to discuss book banning and other forms of censorship in the past, present – and the future.

On Thursday, October 13th at 12 noon hosted in the K. Bruce Sherbine Lounge at Penn State Worthington Scranton Campus, 120 Ridge View Drive, Dunmore, PA. Campus Map

Quayston Night at the Bog- moved to October 17th

Connor McGuigan and Mike Quinn’s popular quiz night, Quayston Night at the Bog, will feature questions from 10 years of Scranton Reads. It has been moved to Monday, October 17th at 9:30 pm so you have an extra week to study!

Tonight! Dystopian Literature Panel

Professors from the University of Scranton and Marywood University will discuss the history of Dystopian Literature and Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 in 228 Brennan Hall at the University of Scranton Campus at 6 pm tonight. Brennan Hall is located on the east side of the 300 block of Madison Avenue on campus (Campus Map.)

Miss Liz’s Drawing Group: Scranton Reads Edition

Artist in Residence Liz Kluesner held her Scranton Reads Edition of her monthly Drawing Group. The young artists and their parents worked on a Banned Books sculpture to celebrate this year’s selected work, Fahrenheit 451. The artists painted their thoughts about banned books on the cardboard flames and Miss Liz helped construct the sculpture.

It’s currently drying but will be up for the month long Banned Books Display in the lobby of the Lackawanna County Children’s Library starting on Saturday, September 24th.
